Our Staff's Scores for 17.1

The road to the CrossFit Games starts months before the Open. Everyone knows that. But during these five weeks, it's a grueling worldwide competition to find out who the fittest men and women on the planet are.

The "CrossFit Open" is the first step of three in this journey. Followed by 'Regionals' and then finally the 'CrossFit Games' in late summer. It's extremely tough to make it to the CrossFit Games, and for most athletes the 'CrossFit Open' is the perfect way to test their fitness against some of the world's best athletes, who perform the same weekly workouts, released on Friday night in late February.

The 'CrossFit Open' is nearing it's 10th year, and the first workout, or '17.1' was released Thursday night - and all CrossFit athletes are welcome to register for the open (registration is $25) and have three days to perform that specific workout and record their times.

The whole point is not to be 'elitist' but a chance to test your fitness along with every other CrossFit athlete in the world. The whole process is quite humbling, and the workouts are actually pretty brutal. However, it's really comforting to know you're busting ass, doing the same workouts as thousands of other athletes around the world. It really makes you feel like you're part of something bigger than yourself and gives you a chance to root and cheer on your favorite athletes as they look to make it to the CrossFit Games.

Anyway, The first of five rounds was released on Thursday night by Dave Castro. A former Navy SEAL and CrossFit HQ's Games lead. Dave is most famously known for crafting some BRUTAL workouts, especially when it comes to the CrossFit Open and CrossFit Games.

You can read more about Dave Castro here.

Anyway, here was his concoction for the release of 17.1 - the very first workout of the CrossFit Open.

Workout 17.1
For time:
10 dumbbell snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
20 dumbbell snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
30 dumbbell snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
40 dumbbell snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
50 dumbbell snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs

Men use 50-lb. dumbbell and 24-in. box

Time cap: 20 minutes

Brutal, right? Yeah, that one sucked. But our whole team did it, and while our backs are still pretty sore, here are our scores:

  • Marc - 218 reps (hit time cap with 7 burpees left)

  • Aimee - 16:31 RX

  • Lauren - 14:58 RX

  • Ashley - 14:27 RX

  • Tony - 14:36 RX

  • Larry - 18:07 RX

  • Cam K. - 14:59 RX

Some of us are going to redo it tomorrow (maybe) but this workout was tough. Way harder than expected. It wasn't quite the 'lung-burner' we all thought we were going to get, but this one was more about keeping a good pace at 80% or so, rather than going all out.

Let's just say it was a good move taking the next 36 hour or so off...either way, can't wait to see what Dave Castro cooks up for us next week. Don't forget to record your scores on CrossFit.com.

Post your times down below in the comment section and let us know what YOU thought about 17.1
