TIPS FOR THE OPEN 2018: Phone A Friend
Sup guys! I (Marc) AM BACK this week with more Open tips. But, just one question first.....have you registered for the 2018 CrossFit Open, yet?
Anyways, if you're an active CF athlete, you should totally sign-up! If not, no worries, and maybe it's something we can tackle next year. Either way, today I am gonna educated you all on one of the best things you can do to maximize the enjoyment of your CrossFit Open experience. It's a MASSIVE worldwide competition between everyone, but more to help you measure your OWN progress, so keep that in mind as you tackle some of these BRUTAL workouts.
So, TIP #3 for the 2018 CrossFit Open is:
CHALLENGE A FRIEND TO COMPETE HEAD TO HEAD!
Look, we are all competitive in our lives, but maybe you're not going to the CrossFit Games 2018, and that's totally ok. You can still compete against yourself (where you were last year) and focus on improvement into this year. You can do more things, are stronger and your dedication and commitment have paid off, so why not test yourself in the Open? Even if it's just for you, or against a friend? Even if you aren't the elite level athletes that do make it to regionals, just have fun and do your best!
Truth is, the vast majority of us are not that caliber an athlete. This little tip I am providing today comes from personal experience and made the Open more fun for me than ever before. It's not about competing against others, again, it is more so about competing against yourself!
Many fans of the sport are familiar with the Ro vs. Boz dynamic of the open. It is must watch television every Thursday night.
For those who are unfamiliar, Ro and Boz both work for CrossFit HQ, and both have roles during the broadcasting of the open head to head matchups. Over the years, these two average Joe athletes have competed for head to head and had a blast doing it. It has become such a compelling rivalry that nowadays Crossfit HQ covers their battle on a live feed.
This was an inspiration for me. I’m not competitive, and yet I am paying to compete. Why not spice things up a bit??
Challenge a friend
So, a few years back, I called out my good friend Sneaky Pete. Pete is a dashing 30-something father of two, and an athlete around my same skill level. He was better at some things, I was better at others. I challenged him, straight up. There are 5 workouts in the Open, so the deal was the winner of more workouts won our own individual open. This bit of head to head action made the last two years of the open SO MUCH FUN. We went as hard as we could because we wanted to beat each other. We talked about strategies that helped us, and we did the workout side by side whenever possible. It took the sense of camaraderie you get at the gym and sent it soaring to new levels.
My challenge to all of you is to go out and face off with someone. This is a measure of progress for sure, but if you want a little extra oomph this open season, challenge a friend. Now, be fair here, make sure they are your same fitness level, and make sure they also want to get after it with you. The result will be ten times the fun, I promise you that.
Shout out to Sneaky Pete for the past few years of competition!
